Thomas Steven Hamby age 66, passed away at his home in Lancing on September 12, 2017.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Hattie Hamby and sister Mary Lou Shannon.
He is survived by his loving wife Nadine Hamby; 5 children, Gwen (Scott) Crowe, Steven (Annie) Hamby, Ronita (Shane) Neer, Rhonda Hamby and Pam Hamby Giles; 15 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 6 brothers; 2 sisters and a special brother-in-law.
Steve was born on February 26, 1951 in Morgan County, TN ferocious and focused until the end. To him it wasn’t “my way or the highway”, it was “my way” or “THE my way” … if he believed something, he believed it until you could show him proof otherwise!
He possessed the gift of speaking the truth, the gift of being a man of his word, of going beyond the expected and doing what he felt was right even if it was unpopular or uncomfortable.
He was a supportive husband, a loving father, son, brother, uncle, friend, a true sucker for stray cats and dogs. He had faith and above all a hard worker in every category. Steve was generous to a fault, he gave more to people than people gave to him. If someone in his family needed something chances were good he would give it. He was extremely humble and neither bragged about nor advertised his generosity. Family was everything to him.
It was to his wife he was the most generous, selfless and loving. She put the light in his eyes and they belong to one another. They are bound and there is no disease or accident or course of this little thing we call life that can change that beautiful, soul saving truth. This separation is a matter of temporary circumstance. Somehow we will survive until the reunion, the sanctification, the fulfillment of our Lord’s faithful ways by the day, by the hour and sometimes, like right now by the minute.
Steve’s last days were not easy. He was always in control, he found it hard to admit the body’s imperfection and the possible need to depend on others for support. Always a giver he didn’t know how to receive. Always the one in charge now he couldn’t picture himself the charge of others. A simple and modest man, a man of integrity. We are all immeasurably stronger for having him as a part of our lives and that is all he ever wanted for us. No, he was not perfect; he was however, perfectly himself. We will hold you in our hearts forever, Steve we love and miss you.
