Sandra Barker Thomas Burns McCoig of Oakdale

Sandra Barker Thomas Burns McCoig, age 77, passed away December 3, 2022, at Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare in Morristown.  She was born November 30, 1945.

Sandra was born and raised on what is now Blizzard Mines Farm in the Boswell Chapel Community of Oakdale, TN.  She attended and was a member of the Boswell Chapel Baptist Church.  During her membership at Boswell Chapel, she became the church’s pianist under the direction of her grandfather, Kelmer Lee Taylor who was the choir director and President of the East Tennessee Singing Convention.  She also played piano and sang in a gospel quartet which included her grandfather and Ira Brown. 

Sandra’s Christian beliefs, biblical knowledge and foundation were taught and instilled into her by her grandmother Armilda Farr Taylor who was a Sunday School teacher and founder of Westside Baptist Church in Oakdale, TN.

Sandra is a 1963 graduate of Oakdale High School.  As a senior in high school, she married O.T. Thomas of South Harriman, TN.  They became the proud parents of Dana, Damon and David.  In 1987 she married Thomas (Tim) Allen Burns.  During their marriage they owned and operated Liggett Square in Kingston, TN.  Tim passed away in 2004.

In 2006 she married Frank Allen McCoig of Leadvale, TN.  Frank passed away in 2008.  Sandra remained in Leadvale until Jesus called her home.

She is preceded in death by her parents Faye Taylor Barker of the Boswell Chapel Community and Jack Barker, Sr. originally of Houston, TX., and her youngest child, James David Thomas.

She is survived by her daughter Dana Thomas Greene and husband, Richard of Wartburg; son Damon Thomas and wife, Sandra of Cleveland, TN; grandchildren USMC Sgt. Tylan Thomas and wife Haley of Cleveland, TN., Hunter Thomas of Cleveland, Caleb Thomas of Knoxville and Allyson Thomas of Rockwood; great grandchildren Bradley, Braylex, Brock and Brinley Thomas of Cleveland, TN.; brothers Jack Barker, Jr and wife Debbie Eblen Barker of Kingston, Larry Barker and wife, Sharon Kelly Barker of Spring, TX.; special sister-in-law Lois Burns Bennett of Cleveland, Ohio; favorite nephew Jim Gibbons, of Nashville, that always got her laughing and kept a smile on her face.  And a host of many cousins and extended family members that she loved so much.

The family will be having a private service at a later date.
