Roy F. Shelton, age 76, of Oakdale, TN went home to the Lord on Friday, December 25, 2015. He was born on May 11, 1939. Roy was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Georgia Bingham Shelton; his parents, Elbert and Felma Shelton; and a grandson, Andrew Helton.
Roy is survived by his children, Sandra and James Helton of Oakdale, TN; Frederick and Janine Shelton of Alexander, NC; and Tabitha and Dennis Hamby of Wartburg, TN; as well as his sister and brother in law, Linda Shelton Ellis and Jim Ellis of LaFayette, GA. Roy has seven grandchildren, Valerie and Joe Lake of Fayetteville, NC; Kayla and Kyle Ruppe of Oakdale, TN; Elaine and Jimmie Hensley of Leicester, NC; Joshua Shelton of Arden, NC; Ryan Shelton of Alexander, NC; Kinley Hamby and Sophia Hamby of Wartburg, TN; and four great-grandchildren, Elijah Ruppe, Maura Paige Lake, Clara Ruppe, and Sarah Hensley. Roy is also survived by a very special cousin, Eldon Melhorn, as well as numerous brothers and sisters in law, cousins, nieces and nephews, and beloved friends.
As a young man, Roy was a member of the of the United States National Guard. He was manager of the Marion Farmers Co-op before re-locating to Morgan County in 1970 and becoming manager of the Morgan Farmers Co-op in Wartburg. Roy was widely known as being a civic-minded man with a true servant's heart. Perhaps one of his proudest roles was that of Chief, and last remaining charter member, of the Oakdale Area Volunteer Fire Department. He also served his community in various capacities throughout the years, including being elected as an Oakdale City Council Member, being a current member of the 911 Board, and also as a First Responder. He was also known by many as the "Cider Man," due to producing delicious apple cider for many events across multiple states. Roy attended White Oak Missionary Baptist Church in Oakdale, but also showed a lifetime of dedication to the St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Camp Austin in Oakdale.
The family will receive friends on Monday, December 28th, at Schubert's Funeral Home in Wartburg, TN, from 4 pm - 7 pm, with the funeral to follow. The graveside service will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Camp Austin in Oakdale on Tuesday, December 29th, at 12:00 with Bro. Danny Jenkins and Bro. Wayne Nelson officiating. Pall bearers are Joshua Shelton, Ryan Shelton, Joe Lake, Kyle Ruppe, Kinley Hamby, Jay Ellis, Jimmie Hensley and Elijah Ruppe. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Roy Shelton Fire Department Memorial Fund at Citizens First Bank.
