Roy E. Liles went to be with Jesus December 22, 2017 at the age of 87.

A Korean War Veteran, Mr. Liles was drafted into the Army and achieved the rank of Corporal. Upon discharge, he went to work at Union Carbide, retiring after 39 years. During that retirement, Roy played an integral part of the building of the Petros Fire Hall and was one of the founding members of its Volunteer Fire Department (of which he was made Director in 1993). His number, 814, was retired in 2010 and he received the first ever “Roy Shelton Memorial Fireman of the Year Award” for 2017.

He appeared as “Miner with Radio” in the movie October Sky as well as being painted by R. Beane in “The Last Chew”

While enjoying deer and ginseng hunting in his younger years, he would tell you that his favorite sport was baseball and he couldn’t wait for the Braves to play.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Helen Wyrick; grandson, Alex Hardin; sisters: Rema Ladd and Linna Long; and brothers: Reece and Roger Liles

He is survived by brother, Ralph (Sueanne) Liles; sisters: Wilma Davis, Euphemia (Bobby) Weiford, and Judy (Bill) Layne; and one daughter, Melinda Hardin (Todd Greene).  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

The family will receive friends Tuesday December 26, 2017 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Schubert Funeral Home in Wartburg. The funeral will immediately follow with Dr. Jim West officiating. The graveside will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday December 27 at the Old Petros Cemetery with Military Honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Petros Fire Department of which Roy was so proud.
