Nicholas “Nick” Charles Tanner, age 88, passed away on Monday, April 10, 2017. He was a native of Morgan County. He was born on June 9, 1928. And was the youngest of six children born to John Everett and Maud Williams Tanner.
He graduated from Central High School in 1947. He was on the football team that were County champions that year. Nick also played basketball and was team captain in 1947.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Reba Christine Cox Tanner, siblings John, Ernest, Billy, Mary-Martha, and Holman. He is survived by son Charles Rodney (Gretta), daughter Linda Lee Gamble (Glenn), Grandchildren Cory Alan, Jessica Marie Neeley, Ricky Alan, and Tammy Sue Price, and 4 Great Grandchildren and step grandchild, Ginger Melhorn, Alicia McGhee, and Jeremy McGhee.
Nick was an avid hunter in his youth, worked in the family Drug Store & Café, and continued there as owner after his mother’s death in 1968. He also collected news clippings, photos and anything that pertained to his family or Morgan County history.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 12, 2017 from 5-7 pm at Schubert Funeral Home Wartburg. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Thursday, April 13, 2017 with Bro. Billy Jones officiating. Interment will follow in the Wartburg Cemetery where he will be buried next to his wife.
