Mary Shannon Newberry of Wartburg went to be with the Lord on January 12, 2023 after a brief
illness at Park West Hospital. She had been a resident of Ben Atchley Tennessee State Veteran’s
Home since October 2022. Those who knew her consistently say she was “always smiling” and
she absolutely loved to get out of the house and go places. It didn’t matter where! She enjoyed
working puzzles, sewing, and cooking. Her Chicken & Dumplings and special cakes were the
best ever! Most of all she loved being around family, and she will be greatly missed by all who
were blessed to know her.
She was a lifelong member of Liberty Baptist Church in Wartburg.
Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years: William Newberry, parents:
Ethel Huling Shannon and Houston Shannon Sr., brother Houston Shannon Jr. (Edna), sister
Lillian Rose Oney (Hershel), and infant sister Helen Mae Shannon.
Husband’s siblings and spouses: Edna Newberry, Bobby Newberry, Calvin (Geneva) Newberry,
Raymond (Mildred) Newberry, Geneva Newberry Beatty, and Rena (Thomas) Edington
Mary is survived by:
Children: Mary Sue (Susie) Kirk and husband Gary, Darrell Newberry and wife Raina.
Grandchildren: Katelyn (Corey) Dantzler, Lauren (Isaac) Chavez, Grayson Kirk, Hannah
Newberry, and Sarah Newberry.
Great grandchildren: Luke Dantzler and Levi Dantzler.
Brother-In-Law: M. L. Newberry and wife Peggy of Chattanooga.
Special friend: Russell Duncan who she enjoyed spending time with and talking on the phone
Special neighbor and friend: Russell Thomas who helped her daily and has been her neighbor
since 1964. Good neighbors are a blessing from God!
Many special lifelong friends including Relda Oney, Roberta Mehlhorn, and Sue Scott who her
daughter is named after.
Many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly!
Very special thanks to Pud and Roy Langley who lovingly checked on her daily with visits, calls,
and food.
A very special thank you to Debbie Roddy for the phone calls and care packages that she
enjoyed so much!
Special thanks to the staff at Ben Atchley Tennessee State Veteran’s Home and the residents
who quickly became her friends. She loved working puzzles with you! Thank you for
brightening her days. A very special thanks to Angelique Laster for caring for her and giving
special attention to her wigs that were so important to her.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 15, 2023 at Schubert Funeral Home
Wartburg from 1:30-3:00 pm with the funeral to follow at 3:00 p.m. with Bro. Roy Langley officiating. Internment will follow in The Morgan Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Wartburg, TN.
