LUCY ALICE DUNCAN PATRICK, age 98, passed away early Thursday morning, April 19, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. The youngest child of John and Annie Engert Duncan, Mrs. Patrick was born on her parents’ farm in Petros, TN, on July 15, 1919. She had three brothers (Richard, Lawrence and Leonard) and a sister (Maudie). Her mother’s family, the Engerts, had settled in Morgan County from Germany. Her father’s family were of Scots-Irish descent. She graduated in 1936 at the age of 16 from Wartburg Central High School. During the days of the Manhattan Project, she worked for Stone & Webster on a crew that surveyed the woods and railroads in present-day Y-12 and Oak Ridge. That meant traveling over dusty roads six and often seven days a week from her home in Petros and working 10-hour days. She still fondly recalled those times of working outside in hot weather among the bulldozers, pans and other machinery but of having a warmer job in cold weather chauffeuring “the bosses” and working in the office that kept account of all the stone hauled.
On July 4, 1944, she married Woodrow Patrick who was in the Army. He left for Europe and World War II shortly after their wedding. With the birth of their first son, Pat, she became a stay-at-home mother and devoted herself to caring for her growing family. Soon after being widowed at the age of 55, she embarked on an almost 20-year job at Gunter’s Grocery Store in Petros.
Mrs. Patrick was a faithful, lifelong member of Petros United Methodist Church. Her heart was saddened by the closing of the church several years ago, but she enjoyed visiting the Baptist Church in town when she was able. She was a steward in the Methodist Church, a poll worker for many years, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Senior Citizens Club, and the Home Demonstration Club. She was a news and sports enthusiast all her life, especially enjoying baseball. Her favorite hobbies were reading, playing cards and working crossword puzzles. Her real joy, however, came from being with her family.
