John Slater

Mr. John M. Slater, Sr., formerly of Sunbright, passed away quickly and peacefully at home in Strawberry Plains, TN, on July 17, 2015, at the age of 89. Mr. Slater was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on October 2, 1925 to Robert Ogden and Elsie Fessenden Slater. He attended high school at Oklahoma Military Academy in Claremore. After serving the U.S. Army in World War II, and attending the University of Oklahoma after discharge, he was recalled to serve in the 45th Infantry Division in Korea, returning in 1952 to earn a Bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Tulsa. Mr. Slater served his country for 45 years in the Department of Interior as a Field Solicitor to the Osage Nation in Pawhuska, Oklahoma from 1957 to 1970, and the Social Security Administration as a Hearings and Appeals Judge in the Nashville and Tulsa Offices.

On August 24, 1950, he married the love of his life, Janet Spore, with whom he was privileged to spend the next 53 years. Mr. Slater was the devoted, caring, loving father of four, grandfather of twelve, and great-grandfather of eight. He will be missed by many family, friends, and associates.

Mr. Slater was preceded in death by his wife, Janet, one brother and three sisters. He is survived by his children, John Slater, Jr. and wife Tana of Strawberry Plains, TN, Susan Kennamer and husband Jim, of Raleigh, NC, Mary Hall and husband Kevin of Calgary, Alberta, Robert Slater of Owasso, OK, and all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 1, 2015 at 4:00PM at The All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Tulsa, OK.
