Wartburg, TN

Jerry Milton Higgs

Jerry “Grey Dad” Higgs was born January, 20th 1933 in Toombs County, Georgia. He graduated from Collins High School in Collins, Georgia.

He was a Korean War Veteran, serving in the US Army, Fort Bragg, North Carolina 1954-1956

From 1963 - 1980, Jerry worked as a Corrections Officer at Reidsville State Prison, Reidsville, Georgia then Brushy Mountain State Prison for another 14 years until he retired in 1995.

After retirement, he didn’t slow down. He worked at Petros-Joyner Elementary school as a Custodian and became a beloved member of the staff and a positive influence on children.

Jerry’s love for football led him to support the Coalfield High School YellowJackets as a team manager for 30 years. You could find him on the sidelines, rain or shine, always there for the team. Many players passing through that football program will always remember Grey Dad and the influence he had.

He was also a HUGE Georgia Bulldog fan. You would typically find him in a Georgia hat, talking Georgia football. He was truly a Bulldog for life.

“Grey Dad” loved life and the people in it. He was quick with a story or joke and even though you heard it before, he would still make it funny. Jerry was loved by many and will be missed dearly.

He is preceded in death by Mother, Sophia Higgs; Father, Victor Higgs; Son, Wayne Higgs; Brothers: Hubert and Victor;  Sisters: Pearl, Vondale, and Monteen; Granddaughter: Jetta Higgs
