Imogene Nelle Evans, *ne'e *Whitus, passed away quietly among family members during the evening of Thursday, October 3, 2013 in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was ninety-six years of age. She is with the Lord now in Heaven.
She was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and a retired elementary school teacher. She was known by the hundreds of students she taught as "Miss Imogene." She was known to her family as "Granny Jeannie," "Grandma", "Mamaw," or, most notably as "Jeannie".
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Robley "Bob" Evans, and her mother and father, Gray and Mary Whitus, and her brother, Robert Gray (Buddy) Whitus and a loving daughter-in-law, Brenda Evans.
She is survived by her younger brother, Don Whitus
Her four loving children: Bobbie Jean (Eugene) Duncan; Mary Emily (Robert) Duncan; Sandra Anne (Charles) McDaniel; and James Carr Evans and Tom Foster ( former son-in-law and family friend).
She is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great, great grandchildren.
She was a 50-plus year member of Sunrise Order of the Eastern Star Number 364. During that time she served as organist for approximately 30 years.
She was the subject of a 2004 book (along with three of her contemporaries and dear friends) entitled "Snow Blossoms": The Ladies of Petros United Methodist Church, By June Patrick Gibbs.
Out of all her many accomplishments, Jeannie was very proud of being a member of the Petros Methodist Church. And she was indeed, a "Good Christian Woman" who will be missed tremendously by her family, special friends, and her former students. But rest assured, Heaven is rejoicing with her homecoming.
