George Edward "G.E." Moore of Wartburg

George Edward (G.E.) Moore passed away on November 8, 2017, at the age of 74.

A native of Wartburg, Tenn., he was born on March 17, 1943, to Edward and Ruby Moore. In 1961, he graduated from Central High School in Wartburg and enlisted in the United States Air Force. On April 15, 1962, he married his high school sweetheart Mary Jane.

As a first class airman, he served in San Antonio, Texas; Biloxi, Miss.; and Dormstat, Germany, as a Morse code interpreter. After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, he worked as an animal caretaker at X10 Biology in Oak Ridge and then as a chemical operator at the Y-12 National Security Complex.

He faithfully served his country from 1961–1965, but he served his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ even more so. He was a devoted Christian and he was active in church, serving as a deacon at Mossy Grove Baptist Church. He was previously a member of First Baptist Church of Wartburg and Union Baptist Church, where he also served as a deacon.

In December 2015, G.E. was diagnosed with stage IV brain cancer. Before going into surgery, he told his family, “No matter what happens, I win either way.” Though he may have lost that hard-fought battle, he won the fight that truly mattered. Second Timothy 4:7 says, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” That he did—his faith in his Savior never wavered, and he loved sharing his testimony with anyone who was willing to listen.

G.E. loved spending time in his shop doing woodworking, and working outside on the farm and in the garden. A special interest of his was driving around Morgan County and photographing every church in the county—all of which are included in a scrapbook. Every month, he gathered for reunions with classmates from the Central High School class of 1961, as well as with other special friends.

Above all else, G.E. was completely devoted to his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Ruby Moore, and his parents-in-law, Jack and Lydia Freytag. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Jane Moore; daughter April (Harry) Bryan and son Larry (Melinda) Moore; grandchildren Megan (Stephen) Hamby, Matthew Bryan, Zach Moore, Jonah Moore and Hannah Moore; a special brother Gene Moore; and “like a daughter” Tammy Coker.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Daniel Ibach and his staff and Dr. Joseph Myer and his staff, as well as lawyer John Agee and his staff for their support and care over the last two years.

The receiving of friends and family will be held on Saturday, November 11, from 1–3 p.m. at Mossy Grove Baptist Church (347 Mossy Grove Rd, Harriman, TN 37748), with the service to follow. The burial will take place at Wartburg City Cemetery immediately following the service.
