Estel “Pap” Carroll passed away at this home in the Stevens community after a battle with cancer and other health problems. Estel went home to his heavenly home to be with his Lord and Savior.
He was born August 1, 1926 at Smokey Creek in Scott County and he was a lifelong member of the Big Mountain Baptist Church in Oliver Springs, where he served has a deacon. Our Daddy was called by his church family as “Pap” and he was well known by most for his rejoicing, laughing, clapping, shouting and praising our Lord and Savior.
Our Dad had a very special buddy at church, Rev. Walter Arnold. They sat for years in the big chairs by the window side by side. Our church family witnesses their love for each other but most of all how they worship and praised our Lord and Savior. They were definitely on the same team “Team God”. Our church family has many treasured memories of them that gave us all the many blessings.
Our Dad was married to his precious, loving and devoted wife, Eleanor Faye Carroll for 69 years. They were married June 30, 1949. Mom went home to Jesus, February 4, 2018 and has waited for Dad’s arrival. He also has a daughter-in-law, Anna Marie Carroll and a grandson, Tony McBurnett. Anna and Dad loved each other dearly. She was the one who got him to do anything when he became stubborn which was many, many times and Glen Newport who Dad cherished like his own.
Dad was a coal miner most of his life until he went to work at Brushy Mountain Prison in Petros, TN where he worked for 25+ years until he retired. He loved to camp, fish and he loved his coffee and smokes. But most of all he loved sitting on the porch listening to WECO gospel station and was faithful every day. He also loved to go out to eat at Shoneys and the China Buffet and when he failed to show up they would call to check on him. The staff there spoiled him rotten. Our Daddy was known mostly for his story telling, he was always telling stories of old times and all the places he had worked during his life. But most of all he loved to share his story of how God came looking for him down in the deep underground coal mines and how he came to know his Savior.
We are going to tell you one more story about our Dad and then we are going to HUSH!
Lamentations 3:22-23
Because of the Lords great loves we are not consumed for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
