Elbert M. Rogers, of Athens, died at Brookewood Nursing Home in Decatur, TN on Saturday, March 15, 2014, one day before his 98th birthday. He had previously lived in Jasper, TN and Bridgeport, AL and had been a resident of Athens for 11 years.
A native of Petros, TN, Mr. Rogers was preceded in death by his parents, Emma and Will Rogers, five brothers and sister and three wives, Nina, Mary Edna and Dorothy.
He is survived by his wife, Patircia B. Cox Rogers
Two daughter and sons in law, Jeanne and Grady Williams, of Athens, and Irma and Tom Allison, of Asheville, NC
Two Stepsons, Charles Cox of Athens and Cary Cox and wife Sally of Finley, OH
Six Grandchildren: Audrey, Andrew, Amber and Alan Williams, Elizabeth Spring and Mark Allison
Four Step-Grandchildren: Jessica, Allison, Grace Elizabeth and Mary Frances Cox
Nine Great-Grandchildren
Many nieces and nephews also survive
He was a Veteran of World War II and a retired instrument mechanic foreman with TVA, having worked at Hales Bar Dam, Widow Creek Steam Plant and New Johnsonville Steam Plant. He was a master gardener who especially enjoyed growing tomatoes and roses. He was a member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church in Athens, TN.
A Memorial service will be held at 2:00PM on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Athens with Fr. Hendree Harrison presiding. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be sent to Doctors Without Borders, at doctorswithoutborders.org for online donations, or to the charity of your choice.
