BAKER, BERNICE MAUPIN, died on December 7, 2013 at Emerald Hodgson Hospital in Sewanee, Tn., at the age of 84. 'Bea', as she was known to all, was born in Rockwood, Tennessee on July 21, 1929, and grew up in the Pine Orchard Community there. She was one of eight children born to Obed and Annie (Kindred) Maupin. She was a graduate of Rockwood High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She then studied Nursing at the Fort Sanders Hospital Training School in Knoxville. In July of 1950 Bea married Joseph M. Baker Jr. (later divorced) of Beverly Beach, Md, and settled down in Annapolis, Maryland, where she raised her four children and lived for 50 years. Bea was a homemaker, who loved to cook for her family, and enjoyed participating in charity and fund raising events. She was a member of the Severn Town Club, and she was once voted 'Miss Annapolis'. She also worked as a fund raiser for her husband Joseph's political runs for Maryland State Senate and US Congress, and had her own business as an Avon Representative for several years. In her early years she attended Saint Anne's Episcopal Church, and in her later years was a member of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Annapolis. She enjoyed singing, and participated in the choir.
She is survived by her four children; Joseph M. Baker (wife Elaine) of Edgewater, Md., Rebecca L. Baker of Bowie, Md., Cynthia L. Baker of Clinton, Md., and Robert L. Baker (wife Grace) of Great Mills, Md.
She is survived by three grandchildren; Chase Burnett of St. Augustine, Fl., Robert J. Baker and Joshua C. Baker of Great Mills, MD.
She is also survived by her sister, Faye Arr of Maryville, Tn.
Surviving nephews and nieces are Ann Carr, Susan Cox, Olivia Clark, Pam Allred, Sheilla Burris, Barry Maupin, John Carr, Frank Bristow, Hugh Arr, Michael Edington, Douglas Edington, Ross Shulmister, Julie Childress, David Shulmister, Kathy Powers, and Craig Stewart.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Harvey Maupin, her sisters Hazel Carr, Reba Jones, Lucille Burris, Marjorie Edington, and Dorothy Maupin. Bea also is preceded in death by her nephews Steve Maupin, Bryan Carr, David Burris, Jeff Stewart, and niece Laurel Woodbeck.
The family will receive friends Friday, December 13, 2013 from 11:00 to 1:00pm at Schubert Funeral Home, Wartburg,TN. Funeral Services will follow at 1:00 PM. Interment will be in the Pine Orchard Cemetery, Oakdale, TN.
